What Is It?
This order can stop someone from forcing you into a marriage, or support you if you are already in a forced marriage. Once it is in place, it can:
- Stop someone from arranging or going through with a marriage
- Stop someone from taking you abroad
- Require someone to hand over your passport or travel documents
- Stop someone from using abuse or pressure to make you marry
- Protect you whether the marriage has not happened yet, or has already taken place
It exists to protect your right to choose who, when, and whether to marry. There is no minimum age, so it can protect both adults and children and there is no fixed time limit. How long it lasts depends on what you need and it can stay in place permanently if necessary.
Who Is This For?
This order can be requested by:
- You, if you are the person at risk
- A relevant third party, such as a local authority, on your behalf
- Anyone else, such as a friend, relative, or support worker, with permission
It can also be put in place without anyone formally applying, if it becomes known that you may need this kind of protection during other related matters.

Breaking this order is treated as a very serious matter. If the other person breaks any part of it:
- They can be confined immediately, without needing a warrant
- They may face serious consequences regarding this.
